Woodland Park Ave — Ballard Fremont Greenways

Woodland Park Ave

Our mission is to create a North-South bike route through the Fremont neighborhood which is safe for riders of various age and ability levels.

What We Want

We want to reconnect Woodland Park Ave by addressing key intersections where major streets make it nearly impossible for pedestrians or bikers to cross safely.

  • Accessible pedestrian crossing at Woodland Park Ave & Bridge Way N
  • Accessible pedestrian crossing at Woodland Park Ave & Green Lake Way N

Longer term goals may also include:

  • More traffic calming measures such as curb bulbs and street narrowing, like what is being done on Woodland Park Ave between N 42nd St and N 43rd St

Why We Want It

There is currently no designated North-South Greenway connection through Fremont. Many cyclists use Stone Way N and Fremont Ave N for this connection, but these options only have uphill bike lanes and have busier car traffic which may not be comfortable for all people.

Improving this North-South route would reconnect the “upper” and “lower” Fremont communities and allow more people to confidently travel by bike throughout the neighborhood. For example

  1. A parent and child could bike together from the B.F. Day Elementary School to the Woodland Park Playfields to practice soccer after school.
  2. While sightseeing, a group of tourists could connect from downtown to the Woodland Park Zoo completely via protected bike lanes/paths and Neighborhood Greenways.
  3. A group of friends has a calmer alternative to get from the north of Fremont to Gasworks Park for a picnic in the summer.

Project History

Woodland Park Ave has previously been proposed as a future neighborhood Greenway in the Seattle Bicycle Master Plan in 2014, however it is not within the city’s 5-year implementation plans. Elements of the Greenway project were analyzed by SDOT in 2016 and it was determined at the time that there was not enough pedestrian or cyclist traffic at Green Lake Way N to recommend adding crosswalks.

However, there has been ongoing community support for improving Woodland Park Ave over the years. The Urbanist published a blog post in 2018 supporting improving the intersection of Bridge Way and Woodland Park Ave N. In February 2026, SDOT began the Woodland Park Ave Traffic Calming Project on Woodland Ave between N 42nd St and N 43rd St. This project was requested by neighbors, including the Friends of Woodland Park Avenue community group, and funded by the Neighborhood Matching Grant from the Department of Neighborhoods.
